Curatorial notes
Pieter Tanjé created this print of Bernhardinus de Moor using etching and engraving techniques. Tanjé made this portrait of de Moor, a theology doctor and professor, during a time of significant intellectual and religious discourse in Europe. The image is steeped in the visual language of power and status. De Moor's attire, the heavy robe and elaborate wig, speaks to his position within the church and academy, as well as his gender. The portrait tells us of the hierarchies that defined the era. Tanjé's expert handling of line and texture not only captures de Moor's likeness but also conveys the weight of his social role. How might de Moor's theological views have shaped his identity and how he was perceived by others? The image invites us to reflect on the complex interplay between individual identity, societal expectations, and historical context.
