Lucien Pissarro created this Devon landscape with oil on canvas, using dabs of paint. It’s a mosaic of greens and browns, all these little marks coming together to make a scene. You can almost feel the process, Pissarro building up the landscape bit by bit. Look at the hillside on the left; it's a symphony of texture, thick with paint, almost like it’s been sculpted. The way the light catches those little strokes gives everything a kind of vibration. The buildings nestled in the vale are rendered with a more subtle touch, creating a sense of depth, like the perspective is opening up. It reminds me of Cezanne, this way of constructing the world with color and form. It’s a conversation across time, painters looking at landscapes, breaking them down, building them back up again. It’s about feeling, seeing, and remaking what’s in front of you.
