This untitled work by Jackson Pollock is all about dynamic black gestures on a creamy white ground. I imagine Pollock in the act of painting, the brush dancing, maybe even dripping and splattering, making marks that shift and emerge through intuition. I sympathize with him, thinking about what it must have been like to be in that zone, that flow state. Look at the texture, how the black paint pools in some areas and thins out in others, creating a sense of depth and movement. I love the way a particular swoosh can communicate a whole mood. It feels like a release! Pollock, like so many artists, was in conversation with the painters who came before him. He was definitely pushing painting to its limits, expanding its potential. To me, painting is a form of embodied expression, embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple readings.
