Editor: This is an untitled print by Christopher Le Brun, currently residing in the Tate Collections. The stark black and white is quite striking. What do you see in the layering of marks? Curator: It’s interesting to consider the labor involved in a work like this. How many states of the printing process were required? What was the division of labor in the studio? What’s the cultural context in which such a work is consumed? Editor: I hadn’t considered the labor involved; that adds another layer to my understanding. Curator: Precisely. The materials and processes tell a story about value and consumption. Editor: I see it now, that focusing on the process offers a deeper meaning. Thanks!
