Friedrich Justin Bertuch created this print for the "Journal des Luxus und der Moden" in 1788. The journal offered fashion plates and commentary reflecting the aesthetic and social values of the late 18th century. The print presents an idealized image of aristocratic femininity: the woman's elaborate dress, complete with oversized hat and delicate fan, speaks to the luxury and leisure associated with the upper class. Yet, it is worth considering the historical context in which this image circulated. Just a year later, the French Revolution would begin, challenging the very foundations of aristocratic privilege. One must consider the artifice of fashion. What is revealed? What is concealed? This image, intended to inspire desire and emulation, also invites reflection on the complex relationship between fashion, identity, and power. It is a visual artifact, which marks a moment of both opulence and impending change.
