This photograph, whose author is unknown, shows the former Sint-Corneliuskerk and the tower of the new church in Wanroij. I like the way photography has of recording process, even though it isn't always obvious. In this print, the textures and material aspects of the churches are rendered in shades of grey. Look at how the light catches the brickwork of the old church. The rough, tactile surfaces are visible, each brick distinct yet part of a larger whole, a community. The monochrome palette gives the image a timeless quality, blurring the line between past and present. There's a real dialogue between the old and the new here. A conversation about progress, change, and continuity. It reminds me of the paintings of Agnes Martin, in which the grid becomes a meditation on space and time. Like Martin's work, this photograph embraces ambiguity, inviting us to bring our own experiences and interpretations to the image.
