Curatorial notes
Jan Wandelaar created this print, "Landscape with Allegorical Figures of Christian Virtues," in the 18th century. Here, figures symbolizing virtues hover above mortals, guiding them toward Christian duties. Note the radiant figure at the top, reminiscent of ancient depictions of apotheosis, a common motif in Roman art, where emperors were shown ascending to divine status. This act of rising encapsulates a longing for transcendence, a theme echoing through centuries. Beneath, the virtues engage with earthly figures, offering guidance. This interaction is not new; similar scenes appear in earlier Renaissance art, where allegorical figures advise rulers, connecting divine wisdom with earthly governance. This cyclical recurrence reveals a deeply ingrained human desire for virtuous leadership and divine connection, playing out across art history.
