Louis Desplaces created this print, "Minerva and Time Revealing the Truth", in the early 18th century. It embodies the allegorical style popular during the Enlightenment, where abstract concepts were depicted through classical figures. Here, Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, is seen alongside Father Time, who unveils Truth, represented as a radiant, nude female figure. Note the contrast between the active, enlightened figures at the top, and the men in the lower portion of the print who are overcome by Truth. This hierarchical composition reflects the era’s emphasis on reason and knowledge as tools to dispel ignorance. The print engages with power dynamics, contrasting divine female wisdom with mortal male fallibility. It invites reflection on how societal narratives are constructed and who gets to define “truth.” This piece acts as a commentary on the shifting cultural values of the period. It encourages viewers to pursue enlightenment while acknowledging the potential discomfort that truth can bring.
