This engraving, "Wereldbeschouwing," was made by Jan Goeree around 1727 using a painstaking technique. Look closely and you'll see a dense network of fine lines, all etched into a copper plate. This wasn’t a quick process. The engraver had to be both precise and patient. The fine lines create all of the tonal variation, from the deep blacks of the stormy clouds to the bright highlights on the figure of "Truth." The image itself is a fascinating blend of science and religion. Scientific instruments lie scattered at the base of the image, a visual representation of the Age of Enlightenment, and humanity's growing interest in empirical observation. But, the ultimate destination of this pursuit is "True Faith," represented by the divine figure above. Consider the labor that went into this print, both artistic and intellectual, and the way it embodies a society grappling with new ideas. Appreciating the material and the making allows us to understand this image not just as art, but as a historical artifact.
