Orazio Borgianni’s "De Ark des Verbonds over de Jordaan gedragen" is an etching, a printmaking technique where lines are incised into a metal plate with acid, then inked and pressed onto paper. This method allows for detailed narratives, like the depiction of the Ark of the Covenant being carried across the Jordan River. The linear quality of etching defines the forms, from the musculature of the figures to the texture of the landscape. The printmaking process itself involves a certain amount of labor and skill, mirroring the effort of the figures depicted. Unlike painting, which could only be displayed in one place, etching allowed for the wide distribution of images, thereby democratizing art by making it available to a broader audience. Consider the labor and skill that went into creating this object, and how it reflects not only artistic vision but also the means of its production.
