Amir Baradaran created "Articulations of the Self 2" using media and digital technologies, ubiquitous materials of our contemporary world. Here, a monitor displays a face, suggesting a live-streamed or recorded performance. Baradaran's engagement with digital media reflects our increasing reliance on technology to construct and project our identities. The inherent qualities of digital materials – their immateriality and malleability – allow for the easy manipulation and replication of images, blurring the lines between authenticity and artifice. This piece implicates social issues of surveillance, representation, and the commodification of identity within digital platforms. The labour that goes into creating and maintaining these digital spaces often goes unseen. By highlighting these materials, Baradaran challenges traditional distinctions between fine art and digital culture. This work invites us to critically examine the role of media in shaping our understanding of self and society.
