Hito Steyerl's 'Drill' unfolds as an environment of projections and spatial interventions. It feels like a process, like Steyerl is figuring it out as she goes, remixing and recontextualizing footage. There's a stark contrast between the moving images on the screens and the static, geometric shapes on the floor. The screens feel immediate and present; the floor like an underlying structure or code that the images are overlaid on. The neon lines recall circuit boards or architectural plans, hinting at unseen systems and power structures. It all feels very calculated. Thinking about other artists, it makes me think of someone like Nam June Paik. It is a different medium, but both he and Steyerl take a medium, moving image, and make you think about something else entirely. It could be seen as critical or celebratory, I think it's best to leave it open.
