Mona Hatoum created "Light Sentence," a large-scale installation comprised of wire mesh lockers and a single light bulb. I imagine her building this cage-like structure, repeating the same gesture over and over to create a space of confinement, and in the middle, a bright bulb. It’s interesting how light can shift and transform the space. The shadows cast by the wire lockers create an almost overwhelming pattern. Light and shadow become a way to experience the complexity of spatial boundaries. Hatoum, like many artists, explores the interplay between the personal and political. The grid-like structure evokes feelings of restriction and surveillance, perhaps reflecting on themes of imprisonment or social control that echo throughout her artistic practice. Art is not made in a vacuum. I think of artists like Eva Hesse, whose sculptures also explore similar themes of space and material, and how, across time, they've developed an artistic language for expressing complex ideas through simple forms. Ultimately, Hatoum’s work creates a space for reflection, where the boundaries between the physical and the psychological blur, leaving us to contemplate our own place within the shadows.
