Francis Naranjo’s video piece, Los colores de la libertad blanco, presents a stark and affecting image, concerned with process. The artist allows the person to breathe, to be, and to act, using the camera to capture an experience. The cool light washes over the subject's face, the man’s gaze directed upward, lost in thought, perhaps searching for something beyond the frame. The high contrast between the subject and background creates a sense of isolation. The texture, or lack thereof, makes the viewer think about absence and presence. Look at the slight movement of the man’s head. Is he searching or questioning his state? Naranjo's work reminds me of Bill Viola, who uses video to explore themes of life, death, and consciousness. Both invite us to contemplate the human condition, to find meaning in the ephemeral moments captured on screen. They celebrate ambiguity and multiple interpretations, inviting us to bring our own experiences and emotions to the work.
