Curatorial notes

Anton Mauve made this sketch of a bowing worker with a tool, possibly a hoe, in the Netherlands. Mauve lived during a time of great social change as the Netherlands industrialized and its cities grew, changing traditional rural life. This drawing of a worker bowing may suggest the social hierarchy of the time. We can ask, is Mauve sympathetic to the worker or simply documenting their place in society? To understand this work better, we can look at Dutch social and economic history, as well as the history of art institutions and training during this time. Mauve was part of the Hague School, a group of artists who painted in a realistic style, often depicting rural life. Examining the archives of the Hague School and Mauve’s biography might reveal whether this image critiques or reinforces social norms. By understanding the social context, we can better understand the meaning of this artwork and how it reflects the culture in which it was created.
