Jonathan Grant Meader made this print, *Holding III*, with its screen-printed geometric shapes, sometime in the late 20th century. It’s a world of colour. It’s a pretty still scene, but there’s something very physical about the way the blocks of colour are arranged. I love the frame of violet triangles that surround the blue-sky, yellow-earth vignette in the center. The image is neatly divided into blocks of contrasting colors: a violet border, a blue frame, a tan field, and a central floating navy oval. Look how the tan and violet create a feeling of earthy solidity, a ground on which the imagination can really take off. These shapes and colors feel like they’re vibrating with possibility, asking you to dream up a narrative. This feels like the kind of image that’s meant to be meditated on, much like the geometric abstract paintings by Hilma af Klint. It’s a quiet, contained world, but ripe with possibility.
