Curatorial notes

Albrecht Durer made this engraving, St. Peter and St. John Healing the Cripple, sometime around 1513. The image depicts a biblical scene, yet it reflects the social anxieties of its time. Durer was working in Nuremberg, a major center of the Renaissance and the Reformation. Poverty and illness were widespread, and religious and social institutions were under scrutiny. The artist uses the story of the apostles healing a beggar to comment on the role of faith and charity in society. Note how Durer uses the detailed rendering to emphasize the contrast between the healthy apostles and the suffering beggar. The reactions of the onlookers, some skeptical and some sympathetic, reveal the complex social attitudes towards poverty. To fully understand this print, one should research the social and religious context of 16th-century Nuremberg. By examining sermons, pamphlets, and other period documents, we can see how Durer's art engaged with contemporary debates about faith, social responsibility, and the role of the church.
