This print of Kabuki actors Sawamura Sōjūrō and Segawa Kikunogō was made by Tōshūsai Sharaku, sometime between 1918 and 1923, using woodblock printing. Woodblock printing, or *ukiyo-e*, was a highly collaborative process. The artist designed the image, which was then carved into woodblocks by specialist artisans. Each block represented a different color, and these were carefully aligned and printed in layers onto paper. The final print owes its appearance to all those involved. Look closely and you can see the subtle texture of the paper and the delicate lines carved into the wood. These prints were not simply artworks; they were a product of a sophisticated urban culture. They reflect the popularity of Kabuki theatre, and the demand for images of famous actors. They were also a commodity, produced for a mass market, and distributed widely. Understanding the material and making of this print allows us to appreciate its cultural significance, and challenges the distinction between art and craft.
