Biography
Tōshūsai Sharaku was a Japanese ukiyo-e printmaker who was active for only a brief period between 1794 and 1795. His prints predominantly depict kabuki actors, known for their exaggerated expressions and dynamic poses, often captured in full-length portraits. Sharaku’s works are characterized by their starkness, bold lines, and realism, capturing the essence of these actors with a powerful immediacy that was unlike any other artist of his time. Though his career was short-lived and his personal identity remains a mystery, his innovative style made a lasting impact on the art of woodblock printing.
