This allegory on the marriage of Franciscus Mollo and Anna Maria Ooms was etched in 1674 by Romeyn de Hooghe. The composition of the print presents a harmonious blend of classical and baroque elements, typical of the Dutch Golden Age. In the center, the betrothed couple join hands, framed by a plethora of symbolic figures. The upper section is dominated by scrolls and putti, bathed in celestial light. The lower section is populated with earthly figures, including satyrs and nymphs, evoking a sense of abundance. De Hooghe uses a complex semiotic system to convey themes of love, fertility, and divine blessing. The inscriptions add layers of meaning, engaging the viewer in a textual and visual dialogue. The contrast between the ethereal upper realm and the corporeal lower realm suggests a union of spiritual and physical love. The dense details, rendered with remarkable precision, invite viewers to decode the layers of cultural codes and artistic conventions embedded in the image.
