Curator: This is a print by Joe Tilson, held in the Tate collections. The work presents three distinct images: Stonehenge, two labyrinth designs, and a spiral earthwork. Editor: It feels like a study in contrasts. The stark black and white emphasizes the rough texture of each image. What materials did Tilson use to create this print? Curator: That’s a good question. The printing process allowed Tilson to juxtapose disparate symbols, creating a dialogue between ancient sites and mythic structures. The labyrinth, for instance, speaks to ideas of initiation and transformation. Editor: I'm struck by the relationship between the hand-drawn labyrinths and the mechanically reproduced photograph of Stonehenge. It makes you think about the accessibility, or lack thereof, surrounding these landmarks. Curator: Absolutely. The spiral at the bottom, perhaps the most elemental form, connects all three. The repetition of these forms suggests a deep cultural memory, connecting past and present. Editor: For me, this piece demonstrates how materials and techniques can alter our perception of even the most iconic symbols. It's a reminder to look beneath the surface.
