This drawing by Mathieu Lauweriks was made in July 1913 in Hagen, and it shows different designs for a brooch, cufflink, hat pin, and vest button. Imagine Lauweriks carefully drafting each form, using the grid paper as a guide for his controlled lines. I feel like I'm watching a system being planned: he's imagining a whole aesthetic world, not just one object. I am sympathetic to this artist's desire to explore the underlying geometries of the world. Look at how the spiraling motif is echoed in the concentric circles of the other designs, creating a dialogue between dynamic movement and static form. It makes me think of Hilma af Klint, Agnes Martin, and other artists whose work attempts to capture a glimpse of the underlying order of the cosmos. These artists across time and place, inspire one another’s creativity, embracing uncertainty and inviting multiple interpretations of what it means to be human.
