Sol LeWitt made this print of wavy bands of color and line, and the movement, or the moving of the lines, is really the subject. Look at the way these bands seem to ripple, less like solid forms and more like a sequence of gestures. See how the texture is almost velvety, achieved through the layering of color. The bands aren't perfect, they wobble and shift, echoing the hand that guided their creation. I find myself drawn to the deep blue band, the way it grounds the composition while still participating in the overall rhythm. It’s this balance of control and chance that makes the work so compelling. LeWitt’s interest in systems and seriality puts me in mind of the later work of Gerhard Richter and his squeegee paintings, where process and accident also dictate the outcome, embracing the unexpected. It's all about letting go and seeing what happens.
