"Magic Carpet Ride" by Joyce Kozloff is all yellows, oranges, blues and greens; a painting that shifts and emerges through trial, error, and intuition. I sympathize with the artist and try to imagine what it might have been like to create it, what they might have been thinking when they made it. The texture, color, and surface shape our experience of the painting and contribute to the emotional and intellectual resonances of the work. Think of the colors and how they can communicate feeling, intention, or meaning. It’s a bit like other geometric abstract painters, but I see her really trying to make it her own. Artists are always in conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Painting is an embodied expression which embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations and meaning.
