Biography
Johann Heinrich Füssli (1741-1825) was a Swiss painter and draughtsman known for his highly imaginative and often disturbing depictions of dreams, nightmares, and the supernatural. Füssli's works often feature figures in dramatic poses, with exaggerated anatomy and intense emotional expression. He was deeply influenced by William Shakespeare, John Milton, and the works of other literary giants, and his paintings often draw on themes and characters from these sources. Füssli's drawings are characterized by their quick, expressive lines and dramatic use of light and shadow, which contribute to the unsettling atmosphere of his work. His dramatic compositions and use of symbolism, often interpreted as a form of "Gothic" art, made a significant contribution to the development of Romanticism.
