This pen and brown wash drawing, "Vision zweier Männer in einer Grotte," was created by Johann Heinrich Füssli, who was born in Switzerland and spent much of his career in London. Füssli was working during a time when artists sought to represent extreme expressions of emotion. Here, two men stand in a grotto, one partially blocking the other as they both raise their arms and look upward, seemingly stunned. What do they see? An ethereal vision of a man carrying a woman. Are they rescuing or abducting her? Füssli evokes a sense of the sublime, that overwhelming feeling of awe mixed with fear. His paintings often explored themes of the supernatural, dreams, and the darker aspects of the human psyche. Füssli lived through an era of revolution and enlightenment, he gave visual form to the complex emotions and psychological states that defined his time.
