Biography
Gottlieb Welté was a German painter and draftsman born in Mainz in 1745 and died in Reval in 1790. His drawings often depicted scenes of daily life, rural landscapes, and classical mythology. Welté’s work is characterized by a delicate and sensitive style, with a particular focus on light and shadow. He frequently employed a tonal palette and used hatching and cross-hatching to create a sense of depth and volume. One of his most well-known works is a drawing titled "The Death of Pyramus and Thisbe," which captures the tragic love story with dramatic flair and expressive lines.
