Biography
Diego de Pesquera was a Spanish sculptor who worked during the 16th century. He is known for his high-relief sculptures often depicting religious subjects, such as the one shown in the image. The piece depicts a scene with figures in a three-dimensional, highly detailed way. The figures, carved in wood and painted with gold leaf, are set against a background of intricate patterns. The detail in the drapery and the expressions on the faces suggest a realistic style characteristic of Renaissance sculpture. These works were often commissioned for churches and other religious institutions.
