Katsuhito Nishikawa's Sardana looks like it was meticulously built with pencil on paper, maybe even rubbed out a bit. I love how the repeated mark makes the circular form, like an ongoing dance. Up close, the texture of the paper becomes really important. You can see the tooth of it, grabbing onto the graphite. The marks are delicate, almost ghostly, and the whole thing feels incredibly subtle. You can imagine the artist spending hours, maybe days, building up this image, each tiny circle adding to the whole. This single mindedness is what gives the piece its power. I can’t help but think of Agnes Martin when I look at this. There's that same meditative quality, that commitment to a simple gesture repeated until it becomes something else entirely. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t always need to shout to be heard; sometimes, the quietest voices are the most profound.
