This sketch was made by Andy Goldsworthy with graphite on paper, and the artist’s hand is clearly evident. The careful lines reveal a methodical process. But there is a tension here. While the circles and lines suggest a precise, planned approach, the title reveals that the work is, in part, about accepting mistakes as part of the creative process. We see the material of graphite used to sketch out a massive-scale land art project, a plan that contains an admitted error. The contrast between the physical work of art and the large-scale construction reminds us of the labor involved in monumental sculpture, and the planning needed to bring it to life. The “mistake” in the title invites us to consider how much planning is required to create work that appears ‘natural’. Ultimately, this drawing shows how initial concept and the natural world collide, challenging our assumptions about art, nature, and craft.
