This is a model of gun ports on a floating battery, made of wood and metal, by Rijkswerf Willemsoord. The piece provides a close look at the material conditions of naval warfare. Instead of fine art materials, we see humble, utilitarian choices: wood roughly hewn, painted a pale blue, and metal fashioned for function, not beauty. Note the contrast between the static wooden frame and the dynamic, operable metal flaps. The textures are rough, the paint job simple, reflecting the urgency and practical needs of military engineering. This model speaks to the social context of its creation. Naval dockyards like Rijkswerf Willemsoord were hubs of intense labor, where skilled workers translated designs into formidable machines of war. The model itself is a form of knowledge, encoding expertise. Appreciating the making, and materials of this object allows us to understand the ingenuity required to solve practical problems with available means. This challenges the boundaries of traditional art history, asking us to recognize the skilled work of military production.
