Francis Bacon made this drawing, Lying Figure, and it feels as if it was born out of a need to make the invisible visible. The monochrome palette directs us toward form and shadow, toward the sheer physicality of being. Looking closely, you can almost feel the texture of the paper and the soft drag of the chalk or charcoal. See how the figure seems to both emerge from and recede into the shadows. The body is present but also dissolving. Look at the foot. It's there but also not quite, smudged and uncertain. That mark embodies the core tension in Bacon’s work, between presence and absence, between the figure and its dissolution. Bacon reminds me of Goya, both in their unflinching look at suffering and the way they use mark-making to convey a sense of unease. Art isn't about answers; it's about exploring the questions.
