Curatorial notes

Antonio Tempesta etched this image of men and dogs hunting an ostrich. The ostrich, a symbol of exoticism and speed, has fascinated cultures for centuries. Here, it becomes the quarry in a hunt, a spectacle of man's dominance over nature. Consider how this scene echoes other hunts across time. Think of the Lion Hunt of Ashurbanipal, where the king demonstrates his power through a ritualized slaughter. The ostrich, though different, serves a similar purpose here, a representation of conquest and control. This image also reflects the changing perception of animals. In ancient times, they were revered as totems or embodiments of gods. By Tempesta's time, the Renaissance had shifted towards a more scientific, detached view, which is reflected in the way the animal is portrayed as nothing more than a hunting target. The hunt, therefore, is not merely a physical act, but a symbolic assertion of humanity’s place in the world. It stirs primal emotions, echoing through art history.
