This is a roll of lilac ribbon, with one frayed edge, by Gustav Schnitzler, displayed at the Rijksmuseum. I imagine that the ribbon must have been quite lustrous when it was first made. I wonder what Schnitzler was thinking. Did he know what the ribbon would be used for? Was it made for a special event, or was it just meant to be pretty? I love the delicate lilac color, and the frayed edge gives it such a delicate touch. I can imagine all the different things that ribbon could be used for: tying up a bouquet of flowers, wrapping a gift, or just adding a touch of whimsy to an outfit. The possibilities are endless. Thinking about the past, I always think of the future, and how artists are forever inspiring one another, across time. This piece reminds me to embrace uncertainty, just like the frayed edge and the unknown function of the ribbon.
