This photo by Delizy shows us the medieval bridge of Auray. It's small, just 70 by 82 millimetres, but it captures such a sense of place. Looking at the image, I imagine Delizy setting up their camera, carefully composing the scene. What were they thinking about as they captured the light and shadow on the stone bridge? The rushing water is so dynamic against the solid, historical architecture. The tones are muted, sepia-tinged, which makes it feel like a memory, a fragment of the past brought into the present. I love the way the arches of the bridge frame the water. It's as if the artist is inviting us to look closer, to consider the layers of history embedded in this scene. The texture of the stone and the movement of the water create a beautiful contrast, drawing the eye in and making me want to be there, standing on that bridge, feeling the spray of the water.
