"Grote brug bij Teupin Blang Mane" is a photograph, and although the date and artist are not known, the photograph speaks volumes. I imagine the photographer out there in the landscape, lugging their camera and tripod. They’re thinking about how to frame this bridge, how to capture its scale against the landscape, and how to deal with the light. The tonal range is so interesting, especially in the grasses in the foreground, which are in deep shadow, so you're only able to make out their form. And then the pale grey sky and the way the bridge is framed in the middle ground is so delicate. I am curious to know if the artist was aware of the abstract qualities of the image they were making. It’s like they’re showing us a way of seeing. It makes me think about all the unknown or anonymous artists out there. They’re all part of one big, ongoing conversation about what it means to see and to make.
