This chair with a reed seat and long back panel was made by Cor Alons. You know, I look at this chair, and I see someone really thinking about how forms can be both useful and beautiful, both simple and interesting. Alons is using mostly straight lines and rectangles, creating a seat where something as humble as a chair becomes a study in geometry. The dark panel at the back feels like a painting in itself, doesn't it? Almost like a dark mirror! I think it's cool how the seat, woven from reeds, brings a touch of nature right into the design. I bet Alons was looking at the work of other artists while making it. Perhaps they were inspired by those who came before them, or who worked at the same time. It is like they are all in a conversation, each piece answering or adding to the others. It reminds me that art doesn’t have to shout to be heard; sometimes, the quietest voices resonate the longest.
