This ‘Trim’ was made by the Sisters of the Order of St. Benedict and you can see it here at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Can you imagine the quiet focus of these sisters? I'm really picturing the concentrated skill that went into creating this small piece. There's a lot of care evident in the perfectly balanced repetition of the crosses and diamonds running along the blue ground. And look at those scalloped edges! It's a simple color scheme, yet it feels so harmonious. I wonder if there were moments of doubt or experimentation during the process. What if the diamonds were a different shape, or a deeper shade of blue had been used for the ground? Ultimately, this work feels like a testament to faith and community. It reminds me that art can be a form of devotion and a way to connect with something larger than ourselves. Like a visual hymn, a song made of thread and color.
