Curatorial notes

Nicolas Perelle created this landscape etching, “Rivierlandschap met bochtige weg,” sometime in the late 17th century. The composition is immediately striking for its balance between light and shadow, depth and flatness. Perelle uses a complex system of hatching and cross-hatching, layering lines to create tonal variations that guide our eye through the scene. The winding road, rendered with delicate lines, leads us into the heart of the landscape, while the dense foliage and dramatically clouded sky frame the composition, creating a sense of both enclosure and boundlessness. The artist employs a limited tonal range, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved within such constraints. This etching invites us to appreciate how Perelle masterfully manipulates line and tone to create a rich, immersive experience. The entire scene is carefully constructed, a testament to the artist’s ability to transform simple lines into a complex, engaging visual world.
