Nicolas Perelle created this rivierlandschap met vier figuren with pen and brown ink, brush in grey, over black chalk, around 1651-1695. At first glance, this seems a simple landscape. However, during the 17th century, landscapes were more than mere depictions of nature. They often served as stages for narratives reflecting social hierarchies and cultural values. Look closely, and you'll notice the four figures. Are they travelers, or locals? What is their relationship to the land? Perelle's work invites us to consider how people interact with and perceive their environment. The figures seem dwarfed by the landscape around them, a reflection of the period's focus on the power of the natural world. While appearing traditional, this landscape subtly challenges us to think about our place within the world, and the stories we tell ourselves about it.
