Juan Gris made this painting, "Le guéridon," with oils on canvas, and it’s like he’s trying to show us the world in a new way, piece by piece. I see mostly muted blues, browns, and greys, cut by sharp planes. Look at how the objects—the guitar, the glass, the bottle—are all broken down and reassembled, almost like a puzzle. The composition is kind of architectural, isn’t it? I wonder if Gris was thinking about how things fit together, not just in a physical sense but also conceptually. Imagine him in his studio, moving around, looking at these objects from different angles, trying to capture their essence rather than just their appearance. The flat planes remind me of Cezanne, but there's also something uniquely Gris about the color choices. There is a very musical arrangement of color and form. All painters are in a conversation with one another. I mean, you can see it right here!
