Léon Davent created this print, "Turkse geestelijke van de orde der Torlaquis of Torlacchis", sometime between 1540 and 1556. Davent was working during a period of increasing cultural exchange and conflict between Europe and the Ottoman Empire. This work reflects early modern Europe's fascination with and often misinformed depictions of the "Orient." The print presents two figures, presumably religious clerics. The costuming is rendered with a mix of accuracy and exoticization which would have been perceived as conveying specific cultural identities. These representations are not neutral; they are loaded with the biases and limited understandings of the time. How does Davent perpetuate stereotypes, and what might have been his intentions or the expectations of his audience? This work isn't just a depiction; it's a statement about cultural difference and power.
