A moi. 1993

Erro made this print, ‘A moi.’, with screenprint. Look at the boldness of those black outlines, like stained glass but with a comic book twist. There's something so direct about the flatness of colour; that fleshy pink, and block red lipstick. It’s like pop art, but something else, something a little…off. Check out the smoke. It’s like a cartoony brain cloud escaping, all wiggly and alive. It makes me think of Sigmar Polke, he takes low brow images like this and elevates them. Does art elevate, or does it pull us down? Maybe it's both, like this smoking woman asking 'A moi.', to me, or for me? Who knows? But that’s the beauty of art, right? It’s never just one thing.
