Bice Lazzari's painting is a playful arrangement of marks made with simple materials. I imagine her adding shapes, erasures, and new lines, as the painting gradually emerges. There is something so human about this work, as if it had been invented on the spot. It's fun to try and imagine what Lazzari was thinking as she constructed the image: the red shapes like punctuation marks and those little groups of vertical lines clustered like anxious crowds. I love the exposed beige background; it's almost like a blank stage where a drama unfolds. The gestures are interesting and economical; each one feels quite distinct, full of intention and character. It reminds me a little of Paul Klee's work, but with a slightly more casual, off-the-cuff vibe. These artists are always in dialogue with each other across time and space. Painting is a form of thinking through doing; it invites us to be comfortable with uncertainty and openness. It allows for many meanings, readings, and interpretations.
