"Krijgsman met speer gedood," or "Warrior Killed with a Spear," was created by Christoffel van Sichem I, a Dutch artist, using woodcut techniques. Born in Germany, Sichem moved to Switzerland, and eventually settled in the Netherlands. This print reflects the tumultuous times of the late 16th and early 17th centuries marked by religious conflicts and wars. It also exemplifies the time in which Dutch art began to reflect the values and experiences of the middle class. Sichem’s stylistic choices reveal the values of the time. The print portrays a scene of violence and death. It's a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict. Warriors are engaged in a brutal struggle with one warrior being fatally struck with a spear, while others lay dead on the floor. This print, with its graphic depiction of violence, invites contemplation on the relationship between power, mortality, and human suffering during the clashes of belief.
