David Michael Hinnebusch’s “Waving My Mind to Mara” is a visual feast of mixed media on canvas. The way Hinnebusch layers paint, collage, and drawing feels like a direct line to his subconscious, a process laid bare. There's a real physicality to it all. The colors are bright, almost acidic, with strokes of turquoise, lime green, and hot pink vying for attention. I love how the image emerges from this chaotic layering—a figure here, a suggestion of landscape there. The paint is applied in thick, gestural strokes, but then he’ll also use thinner washes to let the under layers peek through, creating depth and visual interest. Look at the way he’s scrawled his name across the top. It’s almost like graffiti, asserting his presence, but also playfully disrupting the image. It reminds me of Cy Twombly’s scribbled surfaces, that embrace of imperfection and chance. This piece isn’t about perfection, it’s about the energy of making, that ongoing conversation with the canvas.
