Richard by Morton Schamberg

Morton Schamberg made this photograph, Richard, sometime during his short life. The tones are soft, almost dreamlike, with a gentle blurring around the edges that makes you feel like you're peering into someone's memory. Look at the way the light catches Richard's eyes; they're so clear and direct, and his skin seems to glow in the dark. There's something about the way Schamberg captures the texture of the boy's suit. It’s like he wants us to feel the weight and formality of the occasion. It reminds me a little of some of August Sander’s portraits. There is something eerily detached, yet intimate about both artists' approach to their subjects. Schamberg’s photograph doesn't offer any easy answers, and maybe that’s the point. Art is a conversation, and sometimes it's okay if we don't have all the answers.
