Oleg Holosiy's ‘Girl and Doctor’ is an undated painting made with oils. It's giving me old master vibes, with a very muted colour palette, almost monochromatic. The marks feel tentative, like the artist is trying to find the forms within a haze. Look at the way the paint is applied, so thin and washy in places. It's almost like looking at a watercolor. See how the figures in the background seem to emerge from the shadows. It makes me think about the materiality of paint, how it can both reveal and conceal. Then there's the doll at the bottom of the painting, lying on its side. It's a small detail, but it adds so much to the narrative, like a symbol of vulnerability, which is something you also see in Paula Modersohn-Becker's paintings of children. Ultimately, this painting leaves you with more questions than answers. And that’s how art should be, right?
