This engraving by Petrus Rucholle, from around 1645, depicts a soldier with a musket. It can tell us a lot about the cultural history of warfare in the Netherlands. At this time, the Dutch Republic was a major military power, constantly at war. The print shows the soldier in the process of loading his musket; the movement suggests the rise of military science and technology during the early modern period. The soldier's flamboyant dress and the elegant pose could be seen to represent Dutch militarism. The print is part of a series showing military exercises and it probably had an instructional purpose.
