Katrien De Blauwer's "Untitled" presents a poignant exploration of fragmented identity through collage. De Blauwer, working in a contemporary context, is very much engaged in the feminist project of disassembling traditional representations of women. The work layers found images, obscuring and revealing in equal measure. The woman’s averted gaze and the partial covering of her face speak to themes of concealment and the struggle for visibility, and the use of collage can itself be understood as a metaphor for the fractured nature of identity, particularly female identity. The tearing and layering of images evoke a sense of history and memory, inviting viewers to reflect on the emotional weight of the past and the ways in which it shapes our present selves. This sense of mystery invites us to contemplate the narratives hidden beneath the surface. How can we, as viewers, piece together meaning from fragments?
